Baby Shower Games - Ideas for Games to Play at a Baby Shower

Baby shower games are always the most memorable aspect of the party. Planning games and activities for the guests that attend your shower is fun for you too. Unless there is some good reason not to, do try to make games and activities a part of the shower. Once the gifts have been opened and everybody has had something to eat and drink, games can become the centerpiece of the party.

Baby shower games can be a great ice-breaker for a group of guests that don't know each other all that well. You can organize any number of games with a '"baby" theme. But never choose any game or activity that will make the mom-to-be uncomfortable. Don't choose games that will embarrass your guests either.

It's a nice idea to have a store of prizes for the winners of your baby shower games. After all what's a game without a prize at the end? These don't have to be expensive. Prizes can be candy, cookies, foam bath sachets, miniature soaps or fridge magnets.

If you're stuck for ideas here is a list of baby shower games to get you started:

1) Guess theTummy Size - In this baby shower game guests are given ribbon or string to cut to the size they think the mom-to-be's tummy is. The ribbon is then measured against the mom-to-be's stomach and the guest who is the closest wins a prize. Baby shower games like these should be avoided if the mom is at all self-conscious about her weight!

2) Mommies and Babies - In this game guests try to guess the correct names for animal babies. This is a simple activity but one of the best baby shower games to play. The guest who gets the most correct answers gets a prize. Try a package of animal crackers!

3) In the Baby Picture Guessing Game guests are asked to bring a baby picture along. Then everybody has fun trying to guess which guest belongs to which picture. This is one of those baby shower games that entertains guests and keeps them guessing as they try to figure it out by studying each other's faces.

Families can be families in California

The California Supreme Court has just ruled that the state has no business checking what's in your pants before allowing you to get married. Yep, my beloved home state has decided that love, not sex, is what counts when making a long-term, if not lifetime, commitment to another. This makes California the second state (after Massachusetts) to allow anyone to marry.

This is wonderful news for the families that have, up until now, had to try and explain why a child's parents can't get married when other parents can. It also sends a positive message to kids that love does not equal sex -- sex can be a part of love, but it's not the only, or even the most important, part.

In reality, the decision (PDF) appears to be limited to saying that you can't call a legal relationship "marriage" for one group and "domestic partnership" for another, solely because of gender and sexual orientation, but the implication is that marriage is for everyone. This is, most certainly, a great step forward.

I suspect I may be going to some weddings in the near future. If this ruling has opened up a new possibility for you and your partner, I can, from experience, heartily recommend Stern Grove here in San Francisco as a wonderful location for a wedding. (Happy anniversary, Rachel! What a wonderful present!)

Stay-at-home mothers as temporary workers

Companies are starting to realize they have overlooked an untapped source of help for emergency projects: the stay at home mother.

Educated and professional women who have opted out of high profile careers are being broached by businesses through flexible staffing networks (like Momcorps or Flexibleexecutives) to take on temporary or emergency projects, some of which can be done at home.

The company gets workers who know what they are doing and are willing to do it for a fraction of the going rate, and the women keep their career skills sharp, get a taste of something besides the daily grind of home responsibilities, and some even use the temporary employment as a stepping stone to re-enter the workforce.

While it is fantastic that opportunities beside selling overpriced candles or makeup exist for SAHMs, it is a little disturbing that these jobs are offering rock bottom hourly wages and former executives are snatching them up. Is it a sign of hard economic times or because SAHMs get so accustomed to being overlooked that they'll accept anything?

Stores won't sell alcohol to parents with kids in tow

Tesco, a large grocery chain in the UK, has angered and bewildered many parents with their new rules regarding alcohol sales. Managers have instructed their cashiers to refuse to sell alcohol to any adult who they suspect may be making the purchase for someone who is underage. Having been told to "err of the side of caution", many cashiers are turning away adult customers who happen to have a child standing next to them. That, of course, includes parents shopping with their children.

It happened to Dominic Zenden. He wasn't allowed to purchase a six-pack of Budweiser because his 15-year-old daughter happened to be with him. "I was dumbfounded," he said. "There was absolutely no indication that my daughter would be drinking the alcohol - it was for me. But the woman told me that they don't sell alcohol to people who have children with them."

39-year-old Debbie Bell had to return a case of Fosters and a bottle of cider to the shelf because her 18-year-old stepson couldn't produce proof of age. She said: "You can't do that just because somebody has kids with them.

A spokesman for Tesco says, "I can understand the frustrations of the customer but I think that any reasonable parent would understand the problem and support our policy."

If think that if Tesco finds any success at all in this new policy, it will likely be due to the fact that adults are going to go elsewhere to purchase alcohol. I know I would.

Shania Twain and husband divorcing

I have always found Shania Twain's life story to be quite inspiring. Raised by her mother and stepfather, Shania and her siblings grew up poor in Timmins, Ontario. She was well on her way to a singing career when both parents were tragically killed in a car accident in 1987. 22-year-old Shania put her career on hold to care for her younger siblings and supported them by performing for audiences at a resort near Huntsville, Ontario. She got noticed there and eventually landed a recording contract. Her first album wasn't terribly successful, but it did catch the attention of producer Mutt Lange, who took her under his wing. Together, they made Shania a star.

Twain not only found success with Lange, she found a husband. The two married in 1993 and had a son, Eja, in 2001. Sadly, their 13-year marriage has hit a rough spot and yesterday Twain's record label announced that the couple is separating. "This is a private matter and there will be no further comment at this time," said Twain's spokesperson at Universal Music Group Nashville.

We all love fairy-tale endings and it sure looked like Shania had found hers. For Eja's sake, I hope these two can work out their differences and continue to make beautiful music together.
