Baby Shower Favors - Great Ideas for Gifts for Your Guests

Amidst the frenzy of planning your party don't forget to create exciting and fun baby shower favors Baby shower favors are a nice party detail that will make your guests feel appreciated and thank them for attending the baby shower. Giving your guests a small, well-thought-out gift is a nice way to end the baby shower and you can tie your party favors in with any choice of theme.

Baby shower favors are also a nice reminder of the party. A friend of mine gave away little fridge magnets with, "Laura's Baby Shower" printed on them. I still have mine on my fridge and it serves as a nice reminder of what a fun time we all had at the party. If you enjoy arts and crafts you can make your own party favors. If not there are a number of companies that specialize in party gifts that you could try.

One idea for baby shower favors is to wrap colored candles in tulle and tie them up with a pink or blue ribbon. You might prefer to use fragrant candles, soap or sachets of foam bath and place them in a pretty bag or gift box. And don't forget that edible party favors are always a hit! Try a tiny selection of chocolates in baby-themed shapes like rattles, teddy bears or baby angels.

You don't have to spend a lot of money on your baby shower favors. You can buy one box of chocolates and split them up into little gifts, decant one bottle of lotion or foam wash into miniature bottles or buy a box of small soaps and divide them up between your guests. You can also choose from cutesy party favors or more sophisticated ones. Fresh flowers are also a nice idea.

Almost anything can be used as baby shower favors. How about tying a pacifier with ribbon on which the date of the shower and the name of the mom-to-be is printed and then sticking these to fridge magnets? This is your chance to allow your creativity to flourish. Think about what you would enjoy receiving as a party favor. Would you like something edible, funny, cute, or wacky?

Use your imagination in creative ways and you will be sure to pick the perfect baby shower favors for your party.

Are you smarter than an eighth grader?

Well, can you at least spell better than one? Here's a good way to find out. MSN Encarta, one of my favorite sites for educational diversions (if there can be such a thing) is offering a spelling test for you to find out. Encarta is a great escape that also lets you know how much you may or may not remember from your school days (you know, way back when?).

There are only ten questions. To some that may mean a lot of pressure and to others not so much. I remember when I lost a spelling contest. I was actually in the 4th grade, not even the 8th, and was one of only two competitors left. I misspelled "diá," the Spanish word for "day" because I misplaced the accent mark.

I guess spelling is ultimately not just about words, but about attention to detail. It also proves you can't trust any of the English-language rules about letters coming before or after each other, silent letters and all that other stuff that befuddles us as we make our way through school.

So, how did I do on the quiz? I'll be honest. I got them all right, but I had a little help from my husband on one of them!

It's summertime and the swimsuits are skimpy

At what age would you consider it appropriate for a young girl to wear a skimpy bathing suit? Before you answer that, let's define skimpy. For me, that would be anything with high-cut legs, low-cut waist and/or tiny triangles covering the upper body. I don't consider myself a prude, but I think little girls should look like little girls and not flat-chested Victoria's Secret models. And while I know that swimsuits by their very nature reveal lots of skin, I think a child's suit should not necessarily resemble a tiny version of an adult suit.

Unfortunately, finding the right suit requires trying on a lot of wrong suits. Wrong suits that my 7-year-old desperately wants, of course. I won last year's battle of the swimsuit and have every intention of winning again this year. After all, I hold the credit card and therefore the power.

I am now gearing up to do battle again, but this year I am previewing selections online first. It is important to try a suit on of course, but looking online beforehand helps me avoid stores where we might run into something like this. Or even this.

I recognize that appropriateness is sometimes in the eye of the beholder, but I also know what I feel comfortable with. What about you? How do you feel about little girls wearing little bikinis?

Image of the Day: Blur

The leaves, the swing and the blurred child in motion make me feel incredibly nostalgic for my own childhood. Thanks to Xenub for a great way to end the week.

School district drops Mondays to save money

What's the easiest way for public schools to save money? How about to not have school in the first place? That seems to be the growing trend, anyway. Our own local district will be shutting down on May 30th this year, a full two weeks earlier than usual. Last year, they took a three week winter break to save money on heating.

But a Minnesota school district is taking it a step further and eliminating Mondays from their schedule. The move will cut 23 days from the school year and save the district $65,000, mostly in transportation costs. The district even says it won't be turning on the heat for those who use the buildings after hours. This is Minnesota, folks...bring a sweater. And a space heater.

I don't want to be a killjoy to all the kids and teens out there planning their future three-day weekends, but I'm not sure that these drastic sort of cuts are the best way, educationally at least, to cut costs. An hour tacked on to the end of each school day doesn't translate to 23 days of instruction. That said, cuts like these are what keeps school districts afloat and people employed. You know what they say about desperate measures, and for many school districts, these really are desperate times.
