Baby Shower Etiquette - Tips for Correct Baby Shower Etiquette

Baby shower etiquette has definitley changed over the years. Traditionally, baby showers were hosted by a non-relative and men were never invited. These days, however, it is common to find a party being hosted by a sister, mother or aunt and there are even co-ed parties.

As the host of a baby shower you will need to make a few decisions. The first thing to decide is when to hold the shower. Baby shower etiquette dictates that it be held held about a month before the expected due date, possibly a bit earlier. Start planning your party about two months before this so that you can consult with the mom-to-be if necessary. Do take her feelings into account when planning the party.

It is perfectly acceptable in terms of baby shower etiquette to hold the shower after the baby is born. This way gifts can be given based on the gender of the child and mom will get a chance to show off the new baby to all her friends. Should the party be a surprise? Surprise parties are quite appropriate for baby showers. But make sure that your guest of honor will appreciate the gesture.

What about throwing a co-ed shower? According to modern day baby shower etiquette a co-ed shower is fine but you should check with the mom-to-be first. If you are planning a co-ed shower make sure that there are games and refreshments on offer that will appeal to the men as well.

How many people should you invite and who? The correct baby shower etiquette is to run your guest list by the guest of honor to make sure that nobody has been forgotten. If the party is to be a surprise, ask her husband or close friends or family to suggest a guest list. Once the list has been finalized send out the baby shower invitations and specify a RSVP date.

According to correct baby shower etiquette, invitations should be sent out a few weeks before the shower. This gives guest time to R.S.V.P. and buy a gift. Make sure to include all pertinent information on the invitation. Invitations can be sent via e-mail or guests can be invited over the phone. If a gift list has been registered this notification should be sent out separately.

In modern times baby shower etiquette is a lot more relaxed. The main thing to keep in mind when hosting a baby shower is that it is a way of celebrating the coming birth of a new baby. Keeping this in mind, you will want to make sure that the mom or parents-to-be be given gifts that the baby can use. If the shower is being held for a second, third or even fourth baby gifts can be more in tune with the couple's other needs (frozen dinners, DVD's or coupons for a night out and baby sitting services).

Kevin Nealon faces fatherhood in a new book

A few months after our older daughter was born, we set up an appointment to meet with a lawyer for "the talk." No, not that talk...the one where you make a hypothetical plan for your child, should you and your spouse be suddenly abducted by aliens at exactly the same moment. Or you know, something worse.

My husband and I were in total agreement on every decision we made regarding our wills and life insurance, especially the one where we never wanted to use them in the first place. After every question our poor lawyer asked, we'd reply, "Well, of course we'll never need it, but hypothetically, we'd like to..." I'm surprised he didn't write it in all caps at the top of the forms we got back: YOU PROBABLY WON'T NEED THESE BUT HERE THEY ARE JUST IN CASE. That would have made me feel better as I stuffed them into my filing cabinet for safe keeping.

Funny man Kevin Nealon, who found fame by creating hilarious characters like "The Subliminal Man" on SNL and the incorrigible but utterly hysterical Doug Wilson on Showtime's Weeds, found himself facing the role of his life at age 52...Daddy.

Welcome to the world

A little over a week ago, ParentDish underwent some changes -- a spiffy new look, integration into AOL Living, and so on. On that same day, my family made a pretty big change too -- my wife Rachel and I welcomed kid number three into the world.

For those wondering about the name, it's Ezra Lincoln Sinasohn and, yes, my mother-in-law approves. I'm not exactly sure where Ezra came from -- I think Rachel just liked it -- but Lincoln comes, obviously, from the president. You know, that equality, freedom, hippy guy from 150 years ago. There is also a traditional middle name in my father-in-law's family that has the same initial and ending sounds -- this is an attempt to sneak that in without stirring up too much family politics.

Ezra weighed nine pounds, four ounces at birth -- not a record by any means, but still hefty -- and was a little over twenty inches long/tall. Our other kids, Jared and Sara, are thrilled by the new arrival. Rachel is recovering, slowly but surely, as we settle into the age-old routine of feed, burp, diaper, repeat.

FDA takes on BPA

The Federal Drug Administration has officially made a statement concerning their slant on BPA, the chemical found in much plastic and a lot of baby bottles. BPA, full name bisphenol A has been under fire for some time as being dangerous to young children.

The FDA on Wednesday said it saw no reason for consumers to stop purchasing baby bottles containing BPA, contending that there is a large body of evidence supporting the fact that products containing the chemical are safe. Although multiple studies have shown side effects in animals exposed to the chemical, the FDA cites two studies where no reason to use caution with regard to products containing the chemical. Both studies cited by the FDA were industry-funded.

Consumer groups and politicians alike have accused the FDA of failing to take action on this and other safety issues, contending they bend to industry interests. Polycarbonate plastic, what keeps plastic bottles shatter-resistant, is made of BPA. People consume the chemical along with liquid, water or food inside containers containing BPA.
